Absolutely! In fact, we encourage our students to be involved in multiple activities. We believe that participating in athletics, JCC, and other extracurriculars provides valuable experiences that complement what students learn in band. Each activity develops different skills—from teamwork and leadership to discipline and creativity—helping students become more well-rounded individuals.Our directors work closely with coaches and other instructors to minimize conflicts and help students succeed in all of their commitments. If two activities happen at the same time, use the guide below to determine which activity you should attend.

Can my child switch instruments?

Generally, no. Students are expected to remain on the instrument they were assigned. Instrument assignments are made carefully based on each student's abilities, the needs of the band, and the long-term success of the program.Frequently switching instruments can disrupt a student's progress and make it more difficult for the band program to grow and maintain balanced instrumentation. We believe that learning perseverance and commitment is an important part of the band experience.On rare occasions, a band director may determine that a student would be more successful on a different instrument. If that happens, the director will discuss the recommendation with the student and parent before making any changes. Instrument changes are always initiated by the band directors, not by student request.

When and what should my child be practicing?

Every day! Consistent practice is one of the most important factors in a student's success. We recommend students practice 20–30 minutes each day, at least 5–6 days per week. Short, focused practice sessions are much more effective than waiting until the night before a playing test or concert.Students should focus their practice on:Concert music – Learn notes, rhythms, articulations, dynamics, and musical expression.Fundamentals – Long tones, scales, lip slurs (brass), rudiments (percussion), and other instrument-specific exercises.Method book assignments – Reinforce the skills being taught in class.Playing tests and pass-offs – Stay ahead of deadlines instead of cramming at the last minute.A good practice session has a purpose. Rather than simply playing a piece from beginning to end, students should identify difficult sections, slow them down, and repeat them until they can play them correctly. Quality practice is always more valuable than simply spending time with the instrument.Our goal is to help students develop a lifelong habit of consistent practice, responsibility, and personal growth. Just like in sports, improvement comes from regular, intentional training—not from occasional marathon sessions.
